How do you define rapist?
Virtually every day I read at least one article in the news that leaves me shaking my head. On November 23, 2015, it was an article about George Lawlor, who has been branded a rapist (even though he hasn’t raped anyone, but apparently that’s a minor detail).
See, his college has been touting “consent workshops” so that men can go get educated about what is rape and what is not rape. Mr. Lawlor’s crime is that he stated his belief that the vast majority of men do know what constitutes rape and are not in jeopardy of committing such a crime, whereas his opinion of the men who would commit rape is that they would likely not attend the workshops. So he wondered (aloud) how effective these workshops would really be at changing campus culture.
Apparently, we live in a time where publicly stating your belief that the majority of men are not actually rapists leads the masses to conclude that the only person who would think that MUST be a rapist. And that’s how Mr. Lawlor received his new title. Have you ever heard of a more faulty logic?
Now let me be clear: I am against rape, against assault of a passed out girl, and against the notion that any guy is ever entitled to sex just because he paid for dinner, bought an expensive gift, or anything like that. But I also do not think most men are rapists. Opportunists? Sure. But rapists? No. Isn’t it a mother’s job to teach her son how to respect a woman?
I don’t have a son, but if I did, I think both my husband and I would be actively teaching this message. And we are Christians, so we’d probably be expressing how we feel sex is reserved for married people. Most certainly, our instructions to our son would include the nuances of what constitutes rape, and even what constitutes sexual harassment. I would expect that if I had a son, he would not feel the need to attend such a seminar in order to learn about these ideas, and I’d like to think he would not be publicly shamed for believing so. At least I hope that would be the case. You never know these days. People are only tolerant anymore of those who think and speak just like them. What is this world coming to?
